William was born in Westminster, VT and moved to McDonough County, IL in 1835, where he was raised. In 1849 he went to New York City and entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons, graduating March 11, 1852. After interning for one year, he returned to IL and in 1859 moved to Stewartsville, Posey County, IN. He joined the 60th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers on Nov 1861, and was made second lieutenant of Company B. Transferred to the 25th Regiment in 1862 and was made Assistant Surgeon. He had to relinquish his position after the fall of Corinth, due to ill health. Settled in New Harmony, Indiana and established a very successful practice. He belonged to the State Medial Society and the American Medical association. he was a Republican and a member of the I.O.O.F.
