William was the son of Jacob Sherman and Rhoda Stearns. He married Martha Warren on Nov 21, 1866 in Filmore County, MN. He married 2nd Mrs Mary Potter Flint on Feb 21, 1895 in Rutland, IA. In the 1880 census he was called a stone mason.

Feb 10, 1898 - Humboldt county Independent - W.H. Sherman was born in New York Nov 17, 1840, and died in Rutland, Iowa, January 31, 1898.

He was married to Martha M. Warren, November 21, 1866. She died October 6, 1891. On February 21, 1895 he married Mrs. Mary E. Flint.

Mr. Sherman had been in ill health for about a year. He was first confined to his bed on January 24, and survived until 9 a.m. Monday, January, 31, when he was called home to enjoy that rest prepared for the people of God.

The funeral was held in the M.E. church and was conducted by the Rev. C.F. Johnson and the pastor, CJ. Messenger. The remains were interred in Union Cemetery.

The deceased leaves a wife, two brothers, and two sisters to mourn his departure.

Mr. Sherman was one of the early settlers, and one of the founders of the M.E. church in this place. He had been an official member of the church for many years, and was a trustee at the time of his death. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him, as a man faithful to duty and ever ready to do a kind act. He will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends. The bereaved one have the sympathy of the entire community in this their hour of affliction. C.J.M.
