Dr. George C. Kienzle, 86, died Sunday August 3rd at UIHC following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 9th at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Mark Pries officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to The Dick Parrott Free Dental Clinic or The Crisis Center of Johnson County.

George was born June 30, 1928 in Lincoln, Iowa, the son of William J. and Anna Kathryn Kroeger Kienzle. In 1945 he graduated from high school in Gladbrook, Iowa. From 1947-48 George trained and certified as a radiology technician at UIHC.

On September 24, 1950 George married Nancy Lee Jones in Gladbrook, Iowa.

George served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War from 1951-52, with a year of that in a M.A.S.H. (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) in Korea as a radiology technologist. He returned to Iowa City where he attended the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, graduating in 1958 with his D.D.S. degree.

From 1958-1964 George practiced dentistry in Rock Valley, Iowa and from 1964-1996 he practiced in Iowa City. George was an adjunct clinical professor at the College of Dentistry in the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine from 1966-1996. From 1969 until his retirement in 2003, he was appointed a clinical assistant professor.

His memberships include Zion Lutheran Church, Johnson County Dental Association, University District Dental Society, American Dental Association, Iowa Dental Association (life member). He was a member of the Mu Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon honorary dental fraternity, and Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity.

He was the recipient of the American Academy of Dental Medicine Certificate of Merit in 1958 and in 2003 he received the Lifetime Teacher’s Award from the senior dental students.

George was an accomplished potter and creator of stained glass and gold jewelry. He was widely known for his great sense of humor. He was a faithful husband, loving father and respected dentist.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Nancy, and their five children, Michael (Susan Frye) of Iowa City, Juliann of Rock Springs, Wyoming, David (Alicia) of Iowa City, Paul (Laura) of Racine, Wisconsin and Matthew (Jacqueline) of St. Charles, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Blake (Mercedes), Martha, Samuel, Ethan, Erica, Rachel, Rebekah and Drake; his brother, Richard (Barbara) of Duluth, Minnesota; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Suzanne Ogesen of Lake Ozark, Missouri; and numerous extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson, Gavin, and three siblings, William, Harold and Margery.
