Funeral services for Walter L. Gilbert, age 85, of Oak Street, Ogdensburg, will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014 at 10:00AM at Notre Dame Church with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours will be held from 2:00 to 4:00PM and 6:00 to 8:00PM at Frary Funeral Home on 515 Caroline on Thursday, August 7, 2014. Mr. Gilbert passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

Walter is survived by four sons; Randall Gilbert and his wife, Jill, of Rockford, MI, Steven Gilbert of Dekalb, NY, Robert Gilbert and his fiance, Victoria Kowalski, of Tempe, AZ and Joseph Gilbert of Dekalb, NY; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Vickie; a son, Donald; five brothers, Robert Gilbert, David Gilbert, Joseph Gilbert, George Gilbert and Thomas Gilbert and two sisters; Wanda Sherry and Betty Gilbert.

Walter was born in Ogdensburg on November 1, 1928, the son of Walter and Agnes Prudhomme Gilbert. He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy. Walter joined the United States Army on October 5, 1946 and was honorably discharged on October 10, 1947. During his service he received the World War II Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and the Army Occupation Ribbon.

Walter married Shirley Northrup on June 6, 1950 at Notre Dame Church with Rev. A.D. Charbonneau officiating. She predeceased him January 3, 2012. Walter first went to work for Diamond National in Ogdensburg where he was a Millwright and foreman for over 29 years. He then went on to work for General Motors, also as a Millwright Supervisor.

Walter loved hunting, fishing and trapping. He also enjoyed the company of his dog, "Tinker."
