"Near to and across the road from the present church building is a large and well-kept burial ground which, it is thought, came into use some years after the church was established in 1845. From reliable information it is learned that the first person buried in this cemetery was Mrs. Penelope Durrence Tippins, wife of George W. Tippins." Mrs. Tippins died sometime after the census date, 25 June 1860. She was a daughter of Welcome William Durrence I (1738-1808) and Elizabeth Williams (abt. 1755-1820).
