During the month of April the Battalion was operating throughout northern Quang Tri Province with focus on search for NVA troops surrounding the Khe Sanh Combat Base in the Hoa Huong District of northwestern Quang Tri Province.
Patrolling in the mountainous terrain surrounding Hill 881 North, the Marines had numerous contacts with their elusive enemy. During one of the many fire fights and with the constant threat of hidden mines; on April 30 Cpl James Mines was killed by fragmentation wounds from a hostile hidden explosive device.
