Joseph Edgar Carbaugh, 89, entered into God's eternal care Friday, March 1, at his home in Ponderosa Basin.

Born April 30, 1923, in Berlin Junction, Penn., he was the son of the late William U. and Salome B. Rutter Carbaugh. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Clinton, Mark, George, Bernard, Warren, and an infant brother, "Harry" who died at birth; and six sisters, Josephine C. Wierman, Geraldine Kaehler, Helen Carbaugh, Sister Geneva Marie Carbaugh, SSJ, Mary Ann Stremmel and Patricia Batoha.

He was a World War II veteran and served in the Army on the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. He worked many years in Airport Operations at Reid Hillview Airport in San Jose and later at the South County Airport in San Martin near Gilroy and Morgan Hill. Flying and airplanes were his great love ever since his first ride in the Ford Trimotor airplane with his brother Ralph when they were just little boys in Hanover, Penn. He earned his pilot's license taking lessons from Amelia Reid at the Reid Hillview Airport. Over the years he owned various airplanes like an Aeronca Sedan, Taylorcraft and Cessna 172.

In Mariposa, he served on the Mariposa Airport Advisory Board around 1989. He was part of the Mariposa Air Squadron in early 1990's. He loved the small community, mountains, wildlife, ponderosa pines and fresh air. Joe was always filled with the zest and joy of life and worked hard to keep up his vision of life in Mariposa. He is resting in peace now and watching over us. He will be sorely missed.

Survivors include his wife, Yukiye Carbaugh of Mariposa; five daughters, Irene Chitwood, Mary Jo Long, Patrice Carbaugh of New Mexico, Ellen Smith of Boston, and Joanne Treadway of North Carolina; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and step-daughters and sons, Karen Banas of Pennsylvania, Robin Kinoshita of South San Francisco, Ken Kinoshita of San Francisco, and Steve Kinoshita of Hayward; and brother, Ralph Carbaugh of Upland.

A memorial service will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 23, at Mariposa United Methodist Church by Pastor Ginger Foster.
