She was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on August 21, 1923, the daughter of Rush
Burton Spain and Mattie Carolyn Barton Spain. She attended Tuscaloosa
County High School, received a Bachelor of Religious Education degree from the
Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va., and a Master of
Education from the University of Virginia. She also attended Belhaven College in
Jackson, Mississippi, Central Virginia Community College and Lynchburg
College in Lynchburg, Va.
During World War II, she was employed at the Brookley Field Air Force Base in
Mobile, Alabama and also served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. In 1950,
she moved to Lynchburg as Director of Christian Education at Westminster
Presbyterian Church. Later, she was employed by Lynchburg City Schools for
21 years as a counselor and reading specialist. She was the first Director of the
Parent Center.
She was a charter member of The Kirk at Forest, Va., where she served as
Treasurer, Ruling Elder, Sunday School teacher, and as Chairman of The
Christian Education Committee. She was a member of the A-STEP committee, a
tutorial program for inner-city youth sponsored by Churches for Urban Ministry,
and was on the board of Lynchburg Retired Teachers Association. Earlier, she
served as president of The Pilotʼs Club of Lynchburg and was a member of
Suburban Womenʼs Club.
She is survived by a daughter Martha Marie Elcan and her husband Scott
Guthrie of Van Nuys, California; a daughter, Jeannette Elcan Arrington and her
children Heather, Jade, Galen, Samantha, Dustin, and Caleb; and a son William
Mark Elcan and his partner Linda Coleman of Rustburg, and his children Jason,
Sean, Lawrie, Nicole, Scott, and Katherine; and 13 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg
by Dr. Don Fowler on Wednesday, July 16th at 3pm. The family will receive
visitors and have a viewing at the funeral home beginning at 2pm prior to the
service. A private burial will take place at the Presbyterian Cemetery.
