DOROTHY MARIE BOYCE

Dorothy Marie Boyce, of Humeston, Iowa, the daughter of John Oscar and Effie (Gilbert) Anderson, was born September 26, 1922, in Chariton, Iowa. She was the second of three children. Dorothy died on April 26, 2014, at Legacy Lodge in Chariton at the age of 91 years and seven months.

Dorothy graduated from Cambria High School in 1940 as Valedictorian. She worked for Kenneth Surbaugh at the Humeston grocery store from 1941 until 1945 during World War II. On September 26, 1946, Dorothy married Ralph Clifford Boyce in Leon, Iowa. To this union three children were born, James Franklin, Carol Maureen, and Kathy Lynn. Dorothy and Ralph farmed in Decatur, Lucas and Wayne Counties, settling at her present home near Humeston in 1958.

Dorothy was baptized into the membership of Eden Baptist Church in 1964, and was a member of Eden Ladies Aid. She later joined the Humeston Baptist Church. Dorothy spent many years as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher and youth leader. She was also a member of the Alva F. Eaton American Legion Post No. 306 Auxiliary and the Fairview Club, serving for over 50 years.

Dorothy was a loving, devoted wife and mother, grandmother and friend. Her quiet compassion, giving spirit and generous nature brought joy to many. Family and friends will remember her for her talent as a seamstress, beautiful crochet work, passion for puzzles, and great love for family. For 46 uninterrupted years family gathered at her home for Christmas Eve and enjoyed her famous macaroni and cheese. Dorothy and Ralph also loved to travel. For 18 years, they wintered in Ajo, Arizona and enjoyed the beauty of the desert and their time together.

Preceding Dorothy in death were her parents; husband Ralph in 1998; brothers, Everett and infant Paul Anderson; her mother and father-in-law, Orville C. and Maude (Gunter) Boyce; son-in-law, Jerry Sullivan; brothers-in-law, Charles Boyce and wife Pearl, and George Cleveland and wife Mary.

Survivors include her son, Jim Boyce and wife Leola of Osceola, Iowa; daughters, Carol Shipley of Chariton and Kathy Sullivan of Humeston; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Roberta Anderson of Seymour, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Dorothy will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were held at the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 with Daryl Hanson and Andy Boyce officiating. Burial was in the Humeston Cemetery, Humeston, Iowa.
