Jane Hyer Addy, 84, formerly of Helena, died of natural causes in Billings on Feb. 6, 2006. She was born in Laurel, on June 29, 1921, the oldest of three children of William Bryan Hyer and Gertrude McDonald Hyer.

She was raised in Huntley. Her father was hired by the United States Border Patrol when she was in grade school, and she grew up moving with her family between towns in northwestern Montana, Idaho and Washington.

She graduated from Lincoln County High School in Eureka, in 1939 and from Montana State College (now University) in Bozeman in 1943 with a degree in home economics. She taught in the Poplar schools until she married her college sweetheart, 1st Lt. Vearle Addy, in Shelby on Oct. 14, 1944.

After the war, they settled in Shelby, where they raised their family. Jane was the homemaker. She enjoyed baking, sewing, quilting, baseball, bridge club and gardening. In 1977, she and Vearle moved to Helena, where she was active in the Master Gardener program. She was also a frequent volunteer at the Montana Historical Society, where she found great pleasure in applying her skill and experience with fabrics. In 2002, she moved to Billings to live with family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Vearle, of Helena; by her brother, Richard, of Anchorage, Alaska; by her sister, Dona (Lloyd), of Denton, Texas; and by two infant sons, Timothy and Patrick.
