On the 1870 and 1875 Censuses his wife, Algeline, was living with her parents, away from David and her children. David's oldest daughter Esther took over her mother's responsibilities, cooking for the farmhands and raising her younger sister. When the family moved to Kansas, Algeline stayed behind in Genesee County, Michigan.
In 1888, David (then living in Minneapolis, KS) sold a small house in Flint, Genesee Co., MI to Mr. Jacob A. Springer, of Vienna, Genesee County for one dollar [$1.00] on condition that said Springer take care of David C.'s wife, Algeline Mills, "during her natural life, to board, clothe and lodge her, and to provide and take care of her during health and in sickness in a good and comfortable manner, to pay all expenses both in health and in sickness..."
