Samuel immigrated to the U.S. in 1854 with his parents, arriving in New York on May 8th.
The family lived in New York for three years before moving to Wisconsin, where they took to homesteading in Bohri's valley. They lived there for nine years, and in 1865 moved to a farm in Eagle Valley.
Samuel married Elsbeth Baertsch, daughter of Andreas and Mary Baertsch on in February, 1879, and the couple had seven sons, Albert, Andrew, Samuel, Edwin, Emil, Louis and Allen. Two sons died at an early age; Albert at six months and Edwin at age eight.
Elsbeth died in 1890, and in February of 1892, Samuel married Rosina Stettler, daughter of John and Anna (Zaugg) Stettler. They had two sons, Ernest and Walter and seven daughters,Anna, Ella, Hedwig (Hattie), Lydia, Martha, Olga and twins Beatrice and Bernice. Their son Ernest died in 1935.
In 1906 the family moved to Fountain City.
Samuel was a member of the Evangelical and Reformed church where he served as treasurer for 15 years. He was the first president of the Fountain City Creamery association, and held that position for 20 years. He served as alderman on the city council for three terms and was president of the Farmers Fire Insurance Company. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge for more than 60 years.
Surviving him were his wife of 50 years, six sons and seven daughters, 30 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sons, Albert, Edwin and Ernest.
The funeral was held at the Evangelical and Reformed church in Fountain City on Monday March 10th, 1947, with burial following in Fountain City Cemetery.
