Our kind and beloved Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, brother and friend Leland Hoover Smith 85, passed away June 9th, 2014 in Montpelier, Idaho.Lee (or Hoover as he was known to a chosen few) was born July 21, 1928 in Soda Springs, Idaho to Levere and Carmen Hess Smith.
He grew up and attended school in the Georgetown, Idaho area.
Hoover faithfully served an LDS mission in the Southern States Mission.
Upon his return from the mission field, He joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Philippine Islands. He loved his country and was proud and grateful to serve. He exemplified the U.S.M.C. motto, Semper Fi. We loved to hear him sing the Marine Corps Hymn.
After completing his military service, Dad married our Mom, Flo Duvall on June 21, 1954 in Clintwood, Virginia.
They're the parents of nine children: Bryan, Shelbyville Kentucky, Kristi, deceased, Stacy, Butte Montana, Cindy and Jeff Coates, Sandy Utah, Stan and Roberta, Murray Utah, David, Georgetown Idaho, Mitchell, deceased, Ginger, Bethesda Maryland, Ronda, Montpelier Idaho .
He's Grandpa to 23 grandkids and Great Grandpa to 19 great grandkids.
Loving and supporting his family was always a top priority in his life.
Lee is also survived by his sister Jessie and brother Jerald.
Dad was employed for more than 35 years at Monsanto and made many good friends there.
He enjoyed helping those in need. Many of his neighbors had running water in their homes during the Winter months because of his kindness and homemade welder.
Dad enjoyed working with his hands and could fix or build anything.
Traveling with family members to watch them participate in sporting events brought him great joy and satisfaction over the years. He was their biggest fan.
Dad was an optimist and always looked on the bright side of things.
He was an active member of the LDS Church and served faithfully in many callings throughout his life.
Dad was a kind, good, friendly man and we will miss him.
Friends and family may call Friday, June 13, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at Schwab-Matthews Mortuary, 702 Clay Street, Montpelier or one hour prior to services at the Georgetown LDS Ward Chapel.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 14th, 2014, 12 Noon, at the Georgetown LDS Ward Chapel.
