The stand of purple flowers marks the grave of a slave whose name is unknown. He belonged to John Sutton, and he stayed with John after the Civil War ended. John asked his family to someday bury the man next to him in the cemetery. When the man died, John's family brought his body to Hickory Springs to bury him next to John, but the cemetery committee would not allow a black man to be buried in the cemetery. He is buried outside the cemetery fence.
