LONG AND USEFUL LIFE
Mrs. Phebe Lindsay Dies at Daughter's Home on Elk Street, Aged 82
Buried in Brown County

A remarkable bright and active lady for one of her years passed away last Friday evening at 8:35 o'clock, when Mrs. Phebe Ellen Lindsay died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. W. Buckman, 526 Elk street. She returned only a couple of weeks before from a visit with another daughter, Mrs. F. C. Bailey, at Rib Lake, being then in the enjoyment of excellent health, but the following Thursday she suffered a stroke of paralysis and on Tuesday of last week a scond [sic] stroke ensued. She failed quite rapidly this time until death came to her relief. Much of the time for the past twelve years or more Mrs. Lindsay had lived with her youngest daughter, Mrs. C.E. Van Hecke, in this city, but when the fatal ailment came upon her she was spending a few hours at the Buckman home, a block south of the Van Hecke's.

The maiden name of the deceased was Phebe Ellen Bean, and she was born in Clyde, St. Claire [sic] County, Mich., Aug. 15, 1826, making her nearly 82 years of age. Her father, Richard Bean, was a veteran of the war of 1812. She was married in Michigan Aug. 18, 1844, to Andrew M. Lindsay, and they continued to be residents of the Wolverine state until 1865, when the family home was moved to Oshkosh and a year later to the town of Pittsfield, Brown county. In 1892 the aged couple moved to Amberg, Marinette county, where they continued to reside until the death of Mr. Lindsay in January, 1895. Their golden wedding was observed Aug. 18, 1894.

Of the twelve children born to Mr. and Mrs. Lindsay nine are still living as follows: Mrs. L.W. Barber, Boone, Neb.; R. Bruce Lindsay, Hood River, Ore.; Mrs. Sam Hagan, Stevens Point; Mrs. Chas. Potter, Myrtle Creek, Ore.; Mrs. A.W. Buckman, Stevens Point; Mrs. F. C. Bailey, Rib Lake; Mrs. Wm. Streckenbach, Anniston, Brown county; Mrs. E.E. Van Hecke, Stevens Point; Andrew M. Lindsay, Home Valley, Wash. There are also 58 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

During nearly the whole of her life Mrs. Lindsay was an esteemed member of the Methodist church and was also an enthusiastic worker in the ranks of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Yet she was essentially a "home" woman so to speak, devoting her every care and consideration to the welfare of her family, but at the same time was always ready to respond to the call of sickness or distress. She will not only be greatly missed by her immediate relatives, but hundreds of friends will always revere her memory.

Rev. C.F. Spray, pastor of St. Paul's M.E. church, conducted services at the Buckman home last Sunday afternoon at 4:45 o'clock. Hymns were sung by Mrs. D.J. Kelsey and Mrs. C.F. Spray, with organ accompaniment by Mrs. Leonard Rice.

Monday morning the body was taken to the Green Bay depot for shipment to Green Bay and from thence by team to Pittsfield, Brown county. Mrs. Buckman went to Green Bay Saturday afternoon and those who accompanied the body from here were the four daughters, Mrs. Hagan, Mrs. Buckman, Mrs. Bailey and Mrs. Van Hecke.

Rev. R.K. Manston, pastor of the Pittsfield Methodist church, officiated at the obsequies Monday afternoon, taking for his text the tenth chapter of Hebrews. The local choir rendered several appropriate hymns, a sister of Mrs. Rice acting as organist. The pallbearers were former neighbors and old friends of Mrs. Lindsay, as follows: James McClure, James Martin, Chas. Lucia, Vexter Rice, Alban Hunter, John McKay. Among those who accompanied the body from Green Bay were Mrs. Burgess, a sister of the deceased lady, and Miss Dora Dutton, a grandniece, both of Abrams, Oconto county. It was one of the most largely attended funerals ever held at the Pittsfield church.

Many beautiful flowers were contributed by friends of the family, and for those and many other kind consideration shown, the sorrowing ones are truly grateful.
