Funeral Rites Tomorrow for Mrs. Jean Howard McDuffie

Funeral services will be held tomorrow for Mrs. Jean Howard McDuffie, social and civic leader, who died yesterday in a San Francisco hospital. She was 75.
Mrs. McDuffie was the widow of Duncan McDuffie prominent Berkeley real estate dealer, civic leader and noted conservationist who died in 1951.
With her husband, Mrs. McDuffie was active in conservation work with the Save the Redwoods League, the Sierra Club, and the Garden Club of America. She was a founder and part president of the Children's Hospital of the East Bay.
As a member of the Alameda County Board of Public Welfare, she compiled the first survey of the social agencies of Alameda County in 1917.
A native of Pennsylvania, she spent most of her life in the Oakland area.
The McDuffies maintained a home at 22 Roble Road, Berkeley, for many years. It was famous for its rose garden.
Since the death of her husband, however, Mrs. McDuffie had been living in an apartment at 1155 California St., San Francisco.
Her husband and the late Joseph J. Mason entered the real estate business in Berkeley in 1905 and developed many of the Bay Area's residential areas including the Claremont, Northbrae, and Berkeley Heights districts of Berkeley and St. Francis Wood in San Francisco.
Mrs. McDuffie is survived by two brothers, Charles P. Howard of Walnut Creek, president of the Howard Terminals, Inc. of Oakland, and Henry S. Howard of Oakland.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Tower Chapel of Mountain View Cemetery under the direction of the Albert Brown Mortuary.
