JOHN L. HOWARD DIED OF STROKE
President of Fuel Company Succumbs Before Case Ends

Shortly before the receipt from Washington, D. C., of an order which would have caused the dismissal of the federal indictment against him, John L. Howard, president of the Western Fuel company, officials of which are on trial in the United States District Court, passed away at his home, 87 Vernon street late yesterday afternoon.
His death occurred almost twenty-four hours after he suffered a stroke of apoplexy at his home, said by his friends to be the result of nervous strain caused by the trial.
The city hall flag was half-mast today out of respect to the memory of Howard, who was a former city councilman.
The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock, from the family residence. Rev. Edward L. Parsons of St. Mark's church, Berkeley, will read the service. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery and will be private. The following will act as honorary pallbearers: Warring Wilkinson, Warren Olney, Robert Bruce, John Farle, George H. Collins, James K. Moffitt, Dorald Y. Campbell, M. F. Carlston and Warren Olney, Jr.
(several paragraphs omitted)
Howard was a native of Philadelphia aged 63 years. Besides his widow (formerly Helen Coe), the deceased president of the coal company leaves six children John L. Howard Jr. whose wife was Miss Edith Norcross, sister of David Norcross, the secretary of the fuel concern: Henry S. Howard, Charles P. Howard and Mrs. Duncan McDuffie (formerly Jean Howard), children by his first wife, and Sidney and Bruce Howard children by his second wife.
