She was a daughter of William Garland Mattingly (1896-1980) and his wife Bessie May, nee Roby (1891-1926). Her mother died of tuberculosis, leaving her husband with five small children: Geraldine (10), Mary Ruth (7), Joseph Charles "JC" (5), Mary Kathleen (3), and Mary Ethel (18 months).
Garland moved his family to Louisville and placed the children in orphan homes for a time as he struggled to care for his family.
