Funeral services for Joel Travis O'Brien, 97, of Lamesa will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Second Baptist Church with Brother Dennis Adams officiating. Interment will follow in Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Branon Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Monday, June 30, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Branon Funeral Home. Joel passed away Friday, June 27, 2014 in Lubbock. He was born December 5, 1916 in Cisco, Texas to N.T. O'Brien and Pearl (Hazelwood) O'Brien. He married Lois Murl Cozart in 1942 she preceded him in death in 1957. Joel and his family moved from Eastland County to Dawson County in covered wagons in 1925. He worked during WWII as an aircraft inspector for Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego. Upon returning to the Dawson County area in 1945 Joel purchased a farm, he lived on that farm raising cotton and cattle for 69 years. Joel also served as a trustee on Klondike School Board. Joel was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years. He is survived by his children, Bill O'Brien and wife, Lynn of Lamesa, Barry O'Brien and wife, Susan of Borden County, Marla Parker, of Birmingham; grandchildren, Wes O'Brien, Branden O'Brien, Mindi Guiterrez, Staci Teeters, Ashlee Parker, Luke Parker, Aly Parker, and Tess Parker; and 15 great-grandchildren; brother, T.R. "Dick" O'Brien; sisters, Hazel Rinewalt, and Wanda Beam. Joel is preceded in death by his wife; parents; stepmother, Mae Kennedy O'Brien; sister, Norma Brown; grandson, Clint O'Brien. The Family suggests memorials or charities to Friendship Baptist Church, PO Box 1164, Lamesa, Texas 79331; West Texas Boys Ranch; or American Cancer Society.
