Ernest Monroe Steward, son of Washington Worth Steward and Martha Louise Stewart, was born at Stewards Mill, Texas on August 24, 1900. He was educated in the Stewards Mill and Wortham Schools and worked for his parents during his early years. On January 20, 1922, he married Ione McIlveen, daughter of William Henry McIlveen and Ada Radford. Ernest and his father-in-law operated McIlveen and Steward Grocery; this later became the Jitney Jungle. Later he operated the Red and White Grocery until retirement in 1955. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Fairfield Volunteer Fire Department, and Fairfield Lodge No. 103, A.F.&A.M. He died in Fairfield on April 29, 1988. For many years, he worked part time at Capps Funeral Home. Ernest and Ione's only child was Henry Young Steward.
