It was the deadliest aviation accident in history at that time. The airplane was departing for Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, during "Operation Sleigh Ride" to take military personnel home for
Christmas during the Korean War. An investigation would later determine the pilots inadvertently failed to release the wind gust locks on the rudder and vertical stabilizers, causing a loss of control after takeoff. A design flaw probably gave the flight crew an indication that these control locks were released.
