HAMPTON - Mrs. Drummond, fifth of nine children was born in Edgecombe County, N.C. to Mr. & Mrs. Arterway Lane on May 11, 1924. After graduating from Brick High School she moved to Newport News and worked in the Modern Cleaners for ten years. She married Samuel S. Alexander and they became the parents of Samuel Jr. She later married Chief Deputy Sheriff Willis R. Drummond, widower of Mrs. Marilyn Drummond and their two children, Sheila and Willis (Billy). Mrs. Drummond was granted full scholarship to attend Hampton University and Indiana University, graduating with high honors. She taught at Hampton Institute Nongraded School for three years, five years in Newport News, and was placed in administration where she retired as Principal of South Morrison Elementary School in 1984. Left to cherish her memories are her son, Samuel S. Alexander, Jr.; sister, Frances Lane; stepson Willis "Billy" Drummond, Jr.; stepdaughter Sheila Drummond-Camm; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. A wake service will be from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel Friday, June 27, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. An Omega Omega service will be conducted by the Newport News Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church. Interment to follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.
