She is the Grand-Aunt of President Barack Obama

She is the daughter of Rolla Charles Payne who married Leona Belle McCurry Payne on 28 April 1921 in Kansas. Both of her parents were born and raised in Kansas.

In 1925 she was living with her parents and 1 sibling in Peru, Chautauqua County, Kansas

In 1930 she was living with her parent and 3 siblings at 1136 State St. Augusta, Butler County, Kansas.

In 1940 she was living with her parents and 3 siblings at 1136 State St. Augusta, Butler County, Kansas.

Margaret Arlene Payne, 87, died June 18, 2014 at the DuBOse Health Center at the Cedars Retirement Community. She was the daughter of the late Rolla and Leona McCurry Payne. She grew up in Kansas and earned a BS in Nutrition and Dietetics from Kansas State University, an MS I Nutrition Research and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a PhD in Measurement and Statistical Analysis from the University of Chicago.

Margaret A. Payne began her career as a Professor of Nutrition and the Director of the Graduate Program at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She went on to be a consultant to the National Education Association in Washington D.C. She returned to teaching as a Professor at the School of Education at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. In 1980, she accepted the position of Research Professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She remained there until her retirement in 1990.

She authored numerous articles and two books on educational curriculum and served as a consultant for several professional associations related to nutrition and educational curriculum. She was a member of the Alumni Associations of the University of Chicago and Teachers College, Columbia University. Margaret A. Payne enjoyed traveling with friends and family throughout the United States and Europe.

Margaret A. Payne is survived by her brother Charles T. Payne and wife Melanie; her brother Jon V. Payne and wife Susan and friend Margery Duffey. She is also survived by nieces and nephews Richard Payne, Jon Allen Payne, Stacey Gray, Barack Obama and Maya Soetoro. She was predeceased by her sister Madelyn Payne Dunham and niece Stanley Ann Dunham.

There will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice .
