Deputy Surveyors Comments/Observations About Their Work

Benjamin Hough, DS (c. 1778-1819)
1815: “Meridian line, 48 mile North of the mouth of the Great Auglaize river October 12th 1815...I found thus far exceeding bad ground to run lines over being very thick of under brush, and in many places swamps for a great distance, almost impassable. When I arrive at the Military land, my provision became very short, as that of Mr Holmes and Mr Evans…and at the distance of 4 miles on the S lines
came to an extensive lake, which was in many places bordered by swamps almost impassable, which detained me upwards of one day in getting around it, even then the swamps impeded my progress very much… but the difficulty in meandering round those lakes is beyond any thing you can conceive-From what I have seen this country is no ways inviting-It is true there is some good spots, but a large portion is either useless swamps, or poor and barren-…Our situation is at this time very unpleasant, having been on
short allowance of provision for 5 days and at this time not 10lb of flour for 13 men until a Supply can be
brought from Detroit, which will require at least 20 days; but we don’t despair (sic) of surmounting the difficulty, if our health is preserved, with which we have been blessed so far-“
