He enlisted as a 21 yr. old resident of Vinton, Benton Co. Iowa on June 24,1861 in Co. G, 5th Iowa Infantry. He re-enlisted Jan.5,1864 at Huntsville, Ala. and sent on Veteran furlough from April 8 to May 8,1864. Consolidated Aug.8,1864 and transferred Sept.18,1864 to Co. I, 5th Iowa Cavalry. Transferred to Co. K. On muster out roll for Co. dated Aug.11,1865 at Nashville, Tn. he is listed as "In confinement at Cavalry Depot, Edgefield, Tn. since July of 1865".
William was married to Miss Margaret Brumfield on July 19,1866 by the Rev. Mr. Layton in Wayne Co., Indiana.
He filed for an invalid pension while living at Tullahoma, Tn. on Dec.2,1897 but its unclear if he ever received a pension certificate.
William died at Tullahoma, Tn. on Sept.15, 1898 and his widow filed the following year, on June 20,1899 for a widow's pension. She received pension certificate # 849.249. She was receiving a pension of $30. a month at the time of her death on March 21,1925.
