In Life; Loved and Honored… In Death, Remembered
Jack was born May 2, 1928 in Duchesne, Utah, the second son of Floyd Charles and Alice Elizabeth Winn Baker. He passed away at home Thursday, June 12, 2014, with his loving wife at his side. Jack attended South High School after moving to Salt Lake City, graduating in 1946. Following graduation, he enrolled in the U.S. Army. During his enlistment; Jack was stationed throughout the U.S. and overseas. Service in the military was a humbling and rewarding experience, a large part of his distinguished character and man Jack was. During his twenty two and a half years, military service, Jack received the national defense service medal with one oak leaf cluster, five good conduct award medals and army commendation awarding him the occupation medal of the Berlin Airlift Service. Upon Jack's retirement, he was an enlisted member; medical branch, dental laboratory specialist, honorably discharged, Master Sergeant.
While on assignment in Germany, Jack met his beloved wife, Edith Inge Neumann, in a café located in the city of Frankfurt. Following reassignment; returning to the United States, Jack corresponded internationally by mail with Edith, as he courted her. They were married, November 15, 1957 in Salt Lake City, Utah and have one daughter, Lorraine. Jack was employed as a dental technician and often received praise by many persons in the dental profession for his skills and precision
Jack found pleasure in nature, barbecue grilling, coin collecting, fishing, gardening, hiking, history, picnicking, reading, target shooting and reloading ammunition. Jack also maintained and furthered his German language skills throughout his life so he could enjoy a close relationship with his wife's family. In quiet times, he shared his knowledge, life experiences, and stories with his daughter and granddaughters. Jack was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He adored his two granddaughters who as children, called him "Opa."
Jack is preceded in death by his parents; youngest brother, Jay Baker, and youngest sister, Ann Jones., (Steve, Taylorsville, Utah). He is survived by his wife; Edith, daughter, Lorraine Brown, granddaughters, Danielle Brown and Melanie Brown, Cottonwood Heights, Utah. First born Brother Bill (Phyllis) Baker, Sandy, Utah, and middle sister Betty (Parley - deceased) Pike, Alpine, Utah.
A graveside memorial service, with military honors will be held and presided by Tanner Carver of Garner Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 E. Dimple Dell Rd. (10600 S) Sandy, UT. A celebration of Jack's life and luncheon will follow. (Location to be provided). In lieu of flowers, a donation to one of the following children's hospitals, would honor Jack's wishes and be appreciated; Primary Children's Medical Center or Shriner's Intermountain Hospital for Children.
