Obadiah was not born with the Sr. It only came about because he had a son by the same name. In the records of Putney, the son was called Jr. and it was used after his father, this Obadiah, removed to New York.

Historically, the use of Sr. and Jr. could have been just the older and younger of the same name in that location and once the "Sr." passed away, the one with the "Jr." handle would stop using it. When this happened it could be implied that they were not related to each other. In this instance, they are related.

The following was provided by Christie Trapp:
DEATH: Rootsweb.com NY, Chautauqua Co. Portland: Joy Burial Site, "Located on the former Joy farm on Webster Road, east of Portland Center. Disappeared. No known inscriptions exist. In H. C. Taylor's Historical Sketches of the Town of Portland, he mentions on page 301, 'Old Mr. Joy, father of Capt. David Joy, and a few others were buried in a field now belonging to Richard Reynolds, on lot 19, town 5.....but the precise spot is difficult to determine.'

Obadiah's wife, Elizabeth Doyle is a Mayflower Descendant of Richard Warren.
