Joseph Mayer, Sr., Deceased.
The death of Mr. Joseph Mayer Sr., occurred at Glencoe, Minnesota, Monday morning, Dec. 30th 1901. Mr. Mayer was born in Germany, in 1816, and had therefore, reached the ripe old age of eighty-five years. He was married to Miss Anna Hager, in Germany, in the year 1838, and in 1854 immigrated with his family, then consisting of his wife and six children, to Ontario, Canada. He remained in Canada eleven years, when he removed to Minnesota and settled on a farm in Scott county near the village of Jordan. In 1878 his wife died, and four years later he removed to Glencoe where he continued to reside until his death as above stated. Deceased was a man of robust constitution and always very industrious. Not only did he patiently endure many of the hardships of life but his hard labor and frugality were awarded with a share of the good things of the world as well. The deceased leaves to survive him five sons and four daughters as follows: Clemens Mayer, Frazee, Minn; Charles Mayer, Wahpeton, N.D., Joseph B. Mayer, Glencoe, Minn., Right Rev. P. Alfred Mayer, who presides over a community of Benedictine fathers in southern Illinois, Philippine Mayer, Glencoe, Minn., Elizabeth Mayer, Milwaukee, Wis., Mary and Barbara Mayer, Conception, Mo., the later three being sisters of charity. One daughter Mrs. Pauline Seifert died some four years ago. The funeral services were held at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic church this forenoon at 9 o’clock. Rev. George Pax, officiating, assisted by the Rt. Rev. Alfred Mayer.
