Joseph B Mayer Called to Final Rest (The Republic, 1920)
Dies at St. Mary's Hospital Last Friday from Cancer
This community was shocked when it received the sad intelligence of the death of Joseph B. Mayer which occurred at St. Mary's Hospital, Minneapolis, last Friday afternoon July 30, 1920. Mr. Mayer entered the hospital on the 13th of July and was operated on for cancer of the stomach, the direct cause of his death.
Joseph B. Mayer was born Sept. 17, 1856 in Cayuga, Ontario and came to Jordan with his parents [Joseph and Anna Hinger Mayer] in 1865 when but a boy of 9 years of age. In 1882 he came to Glencoe and on Oct. 12, 1886 was married to Emma Martin, who survives him.
Eleven children blessed this union namely, Alfred of Webster, S.D., Rufina who resides at home, Mrs. Ed. Huntington (Lucia) of this city, Mrs. Alphonse Miller (Hilda) of Hingham, Montana, Mrs. John F. Ellert (Marie) of this community, Raymond of Glencoe, Joseph of Minneapolis, Francis, Carol, Agnes and Beatrice who reside at home.
Besides the children, there are to mourn the death of the late J.B. Mayer, thirteen grandchildren, three sisters; Mary Mayer of St. Cloud, Sister Rufina of Clyde, Missouri, Sister Alfred of Milwaukee and three brothers, Pius of St. Paul, Charles of Muenster, Saskatchewan and Father Alfred of Moorhead.
The deceased has owned and conducted the Glencoe Bottling Works for over thirty years and from what has been learned this enterprise will be continued by members of the Mayer family. Mr. Mayer was a good citizen, a loving husband and a dutiful father.
The remains were conveyed to this city last Saturday morning. Funeral services were held from St. Peter and Paul's Catholic church Tuesday morning at 9: 00 o'clock A.M., Father Max Goevert acting as deacon, Father Louis Mayer of Norwood as sub-deacon, Father Maloney as Master of ceremonies, Father Alfred as celebrant and Father Winter of St. Paul as assistant.
Out-of-town people numbering over 200 attended the funeral service. Interment was made in the East side cemetery.
