He was born April 8, 1942, Blackfoot, Idaho, the son Francis Sidney and Genevieve Pearl Goodwin Hawkes.
He grew up in Blackfoot where he graduated from Blackfoot High School. He continued his extensive education career in Philadelphia and graduated with his Doctorate in Education from Penn State.
He taught elementary education in Phoenix, Arizona and then continued as a professor in education in various colleges.
As an active member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he served a mission in his youth to Mexico. He taught the gospel doctrine class and had served on the high counsel while living in Oregon. He was serving at the church's family history mission at the time of his death.
He enjoyed doing the family's genealogy and was accomplished as a seamstress and made many of his own clothes. He also enjoyed tatting and different members of the family have some of his work.
Survivors include four siblings, Afton Shawver, Pingree,ID Vernile (Doris) Hawkes, Kimberly, ID, Jay (Joyce) Hawkes, Riverside, ID, and Arva Nelson Salt Lake City, UT, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Rowland and Mertin Hawkes, and two sisters, Ruth Scott, Virginia Charlesworth.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2014, at the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery under the direction of the Hawker Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hawkerfuneralhome.com
