Gertrude "Gertie" (Allen) Snyder

1910 ~ 2014

Gertie Snyder lived a very long and interesting life from 1910 to 2014, having ridden in a horse-drawn buggy from Cashmere to Peshastin, to watching a man land on the moon. She was born August 12, 1910, in Gibbon, OK to Lee and Ella Heath Allen. Her family lived on the family wheat ranch in Oklahoma until her father decided to move to Washington State, first to Cashmere in 1915, and later Peshastin, where he operated an apple ranch. Gertie Allen graduated from Peshastin High School in 1929, and married Melvin Snyder in 1931. They lived in Peshastin until they retired. Gertie enjoyed traveling; she took several great trips overseas, even celebrating her 75th birthday on a Greek cruise ship.

Gertie, at the age of 103, outlived her parents, Lee and Ella Allen; her sisters, Grace Ransom and Dorotha Allen; brother, Kenneth Allen; her husband, Mel Snyder; and son, Dale Snyder. The rest of Gertie's family, who love to tell Grandma Gert stories, are daughter, Carol (Fred) Valentine; daughter-in-law, Bonnie (Mike) Snyder-Timpe; daughter, Kathy (Robert) Springer; and 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Gert was so proud and happy when her son and grandchildren formed the family Ridge to River race team, "Gert's Squirts," Gertie proudly wore her T-shirt, "I'm Gert." Gert loved a good party, even though she would say, "No more parties." We remember her skills as a gardener and as an excellent seamstress; she kept us clothed in style. Gertie was the matriarch of the Snyder family.

Gert's "Finest Hour", for her oldest children, was her undaunted actions during the "Great Depression". Born in the middle of the Great Depression, Grandma Gert's two oldest children couldn't have been luckier than having an awesome woman like Gert for a mother. Gert and Mel would move into a fixer-upper with buckets of water, mops and rags and clean… then paint, put down flooring, put up wall paper and make a home for their family. She always saw to it that the family would regularly come together. She will be missed.

We wish to thank her friends from Colonial Vista and the nurses and staff at Highline Nursing Home for the friendship and care of Grandma Gert.

A Memorial Service of Commemoration to celebrate the life of Gertie Snyder will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth. Arrangements by Ward's Funeral Chapel.
