His parents were John and Bertha (Prins) Vander Berg. He attended high school in Sioux Center and graduated in May of 1941.
In the fall of 1941, Elmer entered Morningside College and joined the Navy V12 program.
He was called to active duty in 1943 and was sent to Berea College in Kentucky to continue his education.
In 1944, he was transferred to the University of Detroit as a Midshipman in the School of Dentistry, where he received his D.D.S. degree and was put on inactive duty in 1947.
On November 21, 1948, Elmer was married to Marjorie Bornholdt. They had three children, Michael, Eric and Martha.
Elmer practiced dentistry in Detroit for one year and then set up a private practice in Sheldon, Iowa.
In 1951, Elmer was called back to active duty.
He was transferred from the Navy to the Air Force.
He served in the Air Force for two years on a Mobile Dental Van on the West Coast radar sites and surrounding islands.
Following his discharge from the Air Force, Elmer returned to Sheldon to continue his dental practice until 1975, when his son, Michael, took over the practice.
Elmer passed away on May 26, 2006, at his home in Sheldon.
Left to mourn is his wife, Marjorie. Son, Michael from Sheldon, IA, and wife Lisa with four children, Kimberly, Christopher, Brian and Allison. Son, Eric from Okoboji, IA, and wife Chris with one daughter, Staci. Daughter, Martha from Scottsdale, AZ, with one daughter, Erika. Two brothers, James and wife Marjorie from Battle Lake, MN, David and wife Gladys from Sioux Center, IA. Sister, Ruth Korver from Sheldon, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
