Jean Whitener Cochran, 76, of Charlotte, NC, formerly a resident of Newton, NC, died Tuesday, December 24, 2002 at Wilora Lake Health Care Center in Charlotte, NC.
Mrs. Cochran was born November 20, 1926 in Hickory, NC, and was the daughter of Russell W. Whitener and Harriet Choate Whitener. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-four years, Dr. James D. Cochran, Jr.
She graduated valedictorian from Newton Conover High School in 1944 and graduated in 1948 from Women's College in Greensboro, NC (now known as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro). She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton. Mrs. Cochran was active in the League of Women Voters, served on the Executive Board of the Catawba Valley Area Girl Scout Council, DAR, and various other committees and activities of the Newton-Conover School System.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, December 26, 2002 at Wilora Lake Lodge, 6053 Wilora Lake Road, Charlotte, NC. A memorial graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 27th at Eastview Cemetery, Newton, NC.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
