OKEMOS, Mich. - Joan W. Cress, 72, passed away peacefully on Nov. 14, 2005.
She was born on Feb. 3, 1933, in Newton, N.C.
Joan wrote the following a few days before her death:
"Joan W. Cress died of pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease. As a member of the International Porcelain Art Teachers Association, she was known internationally, having taught her art in Australia, and four summers in Lille, France, as well as many seminars throughout the United States.
My experience teaching began in 1957, but I never did finish learning. Degrees were in Home Economics (BA cum laude) with emphasis in design, and graduate school in Columbia Univ., NYC, where I got my master's degree a year later. Additional degrees from IPAT covered the complete 10 levels of Porcelain Art degrees."
Joan taught Porcelain Art from 1970 until two weeks before her death, teaching over 100 students. Her works were honored in the preeminent journals in her field, and her painted pieces have won several blue ribbons across the Midwest.
Joan was a great friend to many charitable organizations and her philanthropic support benefited many throughout the community.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Dr. Charles E. Cress; her sister, Jean W. Cochran; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Whitener.
Services will be held Monday, Nov. 21, 2005, at 11 a.m at University United Methodist Church, 1120 S. Harrison, East Lansing, Mich.
The family will receive friends today, Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Gorsline-Runciman, 1730 E. Grand River, East Lansing.
Interment will be at Eastview Cemetery in Newton, N.C., on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Thomas Hamilton officiating.
The family suggests donations, in lieu of flowers, to Sparrow Hospice Services, 1210 W. Saginaw, Lansing, Mich. 48915.
