Andrew Alexander Blair was probably the oldest child of Maj. Gen. Francis Preston Blair and Appoline Alexander Blair. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in 1866 and served 2 years in the navy. He was on the U.S.S. Resaca Expedition 1867-1868 from Valparaiso, California to Sitka, Alaska. While on this expedition he wrote a 2 volume diary that is available at some libraries. Andrew then became an analytical chemist and was one of the founders of Booth, Garrett and Blair, Philadelphia, Pa. He was also Chief Chemist U.S. Board appointed to test Iron, Steel and other metals, 1875; Chief Chemist U.S. Geological Survey & Tenth Census, 1880; and a member of the American Philosophical Society. Andrew Alexander Blair published many important papers and reports and at least one book in 1888 entitled "The Chemical Analysis of Iron."

In 1873 he married Anna Sitgreaves Biddle, daughter of Thomas A. Biddle and Julia Cox Biddle. Though Andrew and his wife Anna had no children of their own, they adopted their newphew Francis Preston Blair, III, only child of Andrew's brother Cary Montgomery Blair, after Francis's mother, Emily Johnson Blair, died 16 days after his birth in Huntsville, Alabama on Sept 19, 1891. Andrew's adopted son died in June 1943 in London, England.
