Martha M. Rhoades, 86, of Emlenton RD 1, died Monday evening, May 3, 2004, in UPMC Northwest, Franklin.

Born June 21, 1917, in Grove City, she was the daughter of Clarence and Clara Rodawalt Gibson.

She was a 1935 graduate of Grove City High School. Mrs. Rhoades had worked for Howes Coffee Co. in Grove City where she met her husband, Richard G. Rhoades, who survives. They were married Apri1 29, 1938, and they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this year.

She and her husband bought their present family farm, Dick-Mar Farms, in 1943 and have continued to operate it to the present day. Mrs. Rhoades was a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and in the past had served as a member of the board and had served as the state women’s committee chairman. She was the only woman recipient in 1996 for Distinguished Service to Agriculture. She also was a member of the Venango County 4-H where she was a leader for 30 years and was a member for many years of the Venango County Fair. She also belonged to the Richland Grange at Emlenton RD 1.

Mrs. Rhoades was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Lamartine where she was very active for more than 60 years as Sunday school teacher, Bible School teacher and director of the children’s choir. She also was a member of the Women of ELCA in the church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two daughters, Ann Cheers and husband, Richard, and Elaine Anderson and husband, David, and one son, David Rhoades and wife, Becky, all of Emlenton; five granddaughters, Aimee Cheers, Christine Terwilliger, Susyn Klingler, Jessica Anderson and Jaimee Anderson; two grandsons, Jeff Rhoades and Greg Cheers; and six greatgrandchildren, Faith, Korben, Emilee, Paige, Madison and Jacob. A sister, Esther Perdue of Volant; a sister-in-law, Ethel Gibson of Florida; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive her.

In addition to her parents, an infant daughter, Nancy Martha, preceded Mrs. Rhoades in death in 1952.

Friends called Wednesday and Thursday, May 5 and 6, 2004 in the William N. Rupert Mortuary in Knox. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 7, 2004 in the Salem Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert McCarty, pastor, officiating. Interment followed in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to the Salem Lutheran Church, Lamartine, 16375, or to the Venango County 4-H Development Fund, Agriculture Extension Office, Franklin, 16323.
