Johnson Proctor was killed in the Goingsnake Massacre at the Whitmire Schoolhouse. Sut Beck burst into the doorway of the schoolhouse/courthouse and spying Zeke Proctor, aimed and fired his gun. Johnson Proctor, reacting instinctively, pulled the shotgun barrel away from Zeke, taking the full blast in his chest. He sacrificed his own life in saving his brother.

He was the son of William & Dicey (Downing) Proctor. He was born in Cherokee Nation East, traveled with his family on the Trail of Tears, and died in Goingsnake District, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory.

Upon his tragic death, he left a wife, Elizabeth Foreman, and seven children; Nannie, Eliza Jane, Spencer, Mary, Margaret, Charles, and Susan. His widow later married Redbird Sixkiller.
