Mary Melinda Smith was born to John Roland Smith and Elvira L. Brown in Baldwin County, Georgia on April 15, 1838.

The family migrated to the Clarks community in what was then Lafayette County by 1850. On July 16, 1854, she married Columbus Graves Hayes and by 1860, they were the parents of three children: Martha Ella, Peter J. C., and John Hiram Hayes. They lived in the Clay community.

At the outset of the Civil War, Columbus joined other men from the area to become part of the 2nd Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry. He was killed in battle early on.

On Dec 12, 1865, Mary married returning war hero David W. Dickson (1831-1885), son of Josiah Cyrus Dickson and Mary Louisa Dickson (née Walker) of Waldo, Arkansas. They made their home in Magnolia and eventually in Warren. They were the parents of six children.

After David's death in 1885, Mary remained a widow for several years until she met and married Henry Murray Ferris (1844-1920). They made their home in Waldo.

When she died on January 24, 1908, she was buried next to David W. Dickson in the Barlow Cemetery.
