Hugh W. Tannahill, a retired carpenter, died Thursday at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center at Lewiston from causes related to age. He was 75.

He was born Nov. 18, 1921, at Atlanta, Kan., to Earl S. Tannahill and Roxie Bee King. The family moved to the Lewiston area about 1930 after his mother died.

He attended the Snow School near Webb Ridge, southwest of Lewiston Orchards. He also attended Lapwai High School, where he met his future wife.

He married Orahbell Slenker Sept. 27, 1941, at St. Louis, Mo., where he briefly worked in the oil fields.

Tannahill entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in the artillery on The Philippines and Guam from September 1943, to the war's end in August 1945. After the war, he returned to Lewiston and worked in the sawmills and as a mechanic until joining the carpenters' union in 1951.

He worked around the Northwest much of his life, but the family often returned to live in Lewiston so his wife and their children could spend time with relatives.

Tannahill enjoyed hunting, fishing and flying as a private pilot.

He was baptized as a Baptist. He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Carpenters' Local Union No. 398.

Tannahill is survived by his wife at their Lewiston home; one daughter, Orahlee Morgan of Lewiston; four sons, Hugh D., Earl C., Ray E. and Jeff A. Tannahill, all of Lewiston; one sister, Roxie M. Briggs of Lewiston; three brothers, Ben U. Tannahill of Boise, Wayne Tannahill of Clarkston, and Bobby Jean Tannahill of California; 24 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine Tannahill and Earldean Hanchett.
