Loyd, a native of Fairfield, Ohio, is most known as the keyboardist, songwriter, and singer of the pioneering Christian hard rock band Prodigal, which he formed in 1975 after putting up a flyer on the wall of a music store in Fairfield, looking for other Christian musicians. Guitarist Rick Fields answered that calling and together with Boldman, drummer Dave Workman, and bassist Mike Wilson, formed Prodigal, who would go on to release three albums, one which won the prestigious Dove Award. Prodigal's self-titled debut album was named Album Of The Year in 1982 by Group magazine. "Electric Eye", the group's second album, received Best Of The Year honors in 1984 by both Contemporary Christian Music Magazine (CCM) and Campus Life Magazine.
Prodigal's back music catalog was just set to be reissued on CD when the members of the band traveled to Orlando to spend time with Loyd prior to his passing.
Loyd Boldman passed away April 22, 2014 from liver cancer.
