JOHN ROSS, VENERABLE CONTRACTOR, PASSES

John Francis Ross, 82, a contractor and builder in Horton for almost 50 years, died at the Horton Hospital Tuesday morning, May 30, after a few days illness follwing a heart attack.

He was born on a farm near Monticello, Ia., on May 23, 1868, coming to Horton as a young man to follow his profession as a carpenter. He later went into the contracting business with his brother, Perry, The Ross Brothers built many of the business houses and residences in Horton and the surrounding country the past half century.

Mr. Ross never married and following the death of Mrs. Perry Ross in 1932, the brothers have lived together at the Ross home on Third Avenue West. The Ross brothers hobby since they retired from business about 10 years ago was baseball and there were enthusiastic boosters of the home teams, never missing a home game and going with the team to many out of town contests.

Mr. Ross was a charter member of the Horton chapter of the IOOF lodge and always took an active part in affairs of that lodge.

He is survived by his brother, Perry, who is the last of 11 children. He also leaves a number of nephews and nieces. Those here to attend the services are: Marion Ross, Sr., Clarence Ross, Earl Ross, Ellis Applegate, Mrs. Maude Rethmeier, all of Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. Archie Anderson, Mrs. Henry Gladow of Beloit; Mrs. Blanche Moore of Burlingame; Mrs. Carl Dilling[sic] of Holton; and John and Delmar Ross of Horton.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Rake Mortuary. The members of the IOOF Lodge will have charge of the services, with Rev. Clarence Brooks of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Horton Cemetary.
