Manuel went to work at a very young age for a business that did saddlery and leather repair. During World War II he became a civilian employee for the Department of the Army at Fort D.A. Russell in Marfa, Texas where he made canvas coverings for military vehicles and equipment. After the war he started his own upholstery business in Marfa and passed this business to his son when he retired.
He married first Maria Gonzales and they two children, Orlando and Manuel (died as infant).
He married second Cesaria Zubiate, daughter of Miguel and and Jesusita (Zubia) Zubiate, on 9 Oct 1936 in Marfa. They had four children: Manuel, Herlinda (Linda), Antonia (Tony) and Narcissa (Nancy).
