Alvin H. Reimers, 93, of Grand Island died peacefully Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Todd K. Philipsen will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Army Honor Team. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.

Mr. Reimers was born April 6, 1921, at Dannebrog to Thomas Henry and Nellie Edna (Wilson) Reimers.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife of 66 years, Rosetta Reimers of Grand Island; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Suzi Petersen of Loveland, Colo., Shirley and David Bruner of Fremont, Elizabeth and Ken Peyton and Patricia and Jeff Fulton, all of Grand Island, Carol and Gene O'Gorman Backhaus of Denver, Colo., and Lizetta and Jerry Archer of Franklin; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Tim Reimers of Grand Island and Jamie and Deb Reimers of Omaha; a sister, Jessie Kiser of Dannebrog; a brother-in-law, Arnold Kyhn of Boelus; and 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Alvin attended country school in Dannebrog, completing the eighth grade; he later earned his GED, and received college credits. He entered the U.S. Army on April 18, 1945, at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., serving until his honorable discharge on Dec. 20, 1946. He married Rosetta Wissing on Sept. 24, 1947, at St. Libory. He worked for various cattle feeders in the area and settled in Grand Island. He later proudly maintained and cared for Blessed Sacrament Church.

He enjoyed being with his family, fishing, hunting, volunteering at the church, singing in the choir, his days as an auctioneer, playing cards and being a handyman for whoever needed his help.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, was an usher there and a longtime member of its parish choir. He was active in the Knights of Columbus, was Grand Knight, 94-95, received Top Proposer Award, and the City of Grand Island Knight of the Year in 2006.

He is welcomed into heaven by his parents, three sisters and three brothers.
