MISSOULA - Loeta W. Steele, 91, of Missoula, died peacefully of natural causes at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at her daughter's home.
Loeta W. Steele was born Sept. 21, 1910, in Groverland, Idaho. She was the second of six children of George and Hazel Evans.

She married John W. Steele on July 7, 1932, and they had three children: John Clinton Steele, who preceded her in death, Mavis A. Schlappy of Missoula and Mary Ellen Benoit of Slidell, La.

She was married in the Salt Lake City Temple on Sept. 4, 1951. Loeta was a longtime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She spent many years in service to her church and loved it with all her heart. She was a true "Gospel Scholar."

Her husband John was an "Army man" and she spent her life traveling to many placed in the world including Germany and Alaska.

She became a registered nurse on Dec. 14, 1931, and followed that career well into her late 60s. She loved her garden and knitted and crocheted for many years. Best of all, she was a great mother and grandmother, who read to all of her children. She was a true farm girl who learned the value of work and never forgot it.

She leaves many friends and two daughters, Mavis and her husband Keith, and Mary and her husband Paul; three grandsons, Brent, John and Rock Schlappy; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Ronald; and three sisters, Blanch, Fae and Lavon.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the Garden City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. There will be a reception following the committal services in the funeral home's community room.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Organization, in care of Mavis Schlappy, 523 Speedway, Missoula, MT 59802.
