Josie Sherrill Belk was known to most people, whether kin or not kin, as "Grandmaw Belk". She was a sweet and kind lady. I got to spend many summer months during my childhood with her and her grand-daughter Joey. She loved to garden and grew the most beautiful flowers planting them in "woods dirt" from around her property as well as watering them with "river water" that held lots of nutrients. In the early spring, Grandmaw would take us to certain parts of the woods to gather the newly opened Poke leaves from the Polk plant for a tasty "Polk sallet". I never knew how toxic the plant was until much later in my life. Grandmaw dearly loved to drive her truck and later her Mustang all over the country. I got to share in many a Sunday drive with her and Joey. She would treat us girls to a BIG Dairy Queen ice-cream, or a gigantic lolliepop encircled with lovely colors of flavors; and then there was also that sweet, cold Cheerwine or Dr Pepper soda on the hottest of days. The Belk family to me, with Grandmaw at the helm, was the hardest working family, that even today, I have not seen from any other family. She was a generous lady who nurtured me as well as her own family members. Without her generosity, I would not have had such a wonderful childhood: one without major boundaries and without lots of rules. I am sure she watched us, however, we always felt "free" to wander about and truly be children. Considering so much freedom, we children got into very little trouble. Much to Joey's annoyance, I especially enjoyed traipsing through Grandmaw's woods looking for wildflowers. We spent hours at Grandmaw's place swimming in the river and water skiing when K.Lee would come to pull us. Grandmaw Belk made me feel loved and part of the Belk family. She feed me and washed my clothes. Infact, all the Belks treated me with kindness and as part of their family. Oh, how I wish for all children of today to have the freedom and love that was gifted to me by Grandmaw Belk. I miss her so. Love, Suzzette
