Charles was the son of Henry Becknell and Savina Richmond (also found "Rickman"), who married circa 1841, likely in Stark County, Ohio. I found seven siblings for him--brother Ananias (b.1842), Anna Maria (b.1847), Saloma Ellen (b.1849), James M. (b.1853), Jordan (b.1854), Matilda E. (b.1858), and Edward H. (b.1861).

I found Charles' parents and older siblings on the 1850 Census, living in Paris, Stark Co., Ohio, where Henry, aged 26, was working as a laborer. Savina, whose name was most-often transcribed as "Lavina", aged 24, was home with the three children--Ananias, aged 9, Maria, aged 3, and Saloma, aged 1.

Charles first appeared with his family on the 1860 Census. They had moved to Jefferson Township, Kosciusko Co., Indiana, where Henry, aged 38, was busy farming. Savina, aged 35, was busy at home with their seven children--Ananias, aged 18, Anna, aged 13, Saloma, aged 10, James, aged 7, Jordan, aged 4, Charles, aged 3, and Matilda, aged 1. Also living with the family was 19-year-old Samuel Good.

The family was still living in Kosciusko County in 1870, but they were zoned into Scott Township. Henry, aged 48, was still farming. Savina, aged 45, was keeping house. Still at home with their parents were James, aged 18, Jordan, aged 16, Charley, aged 13, Matilda, aged 12, and Edward, aged 9, who had joined the family since the previous census. Not there were Ananias, Anna Maria or Saloma. Ananias had married Catharine Smith on 19 Aug 1866 in Kosciusko County, Anna Maria had married John Shearer (date unknown), and Saloma had married John C. Ringgenberg on 8 Feb 1869 in Edwardsburg, Cass Co., Michigan.

Seven years after that census, Savina died on 22 May 1877 at age 52. Henry mourned her loss for two years before deciding to remarry, exchanging vows with Sarah U. Mackey on 26 Jun 1879 in Kosciusko County. It was also a second marriage for Sarah. I found a record for a Sarah Wright to a Joseph Mackey on 12 Jun 1861 in Kosciusko County which is likely. She brought two children to the marriage--John W. Mackey (b.1865), and daughter Adda E. (b.1873). Their blended family appeared together on the 1880 Census, still living in Scott Township in Kosciusko County. Henry, aged 58, was still actively farming. Sarah, aged 40, reported that she had had five children, but that only four had survived to that census. The only children with the couple that census year were Henry's son Edward, aged 18, and Sarah's children--John, aged 15, and Adda, aged 7.

Sometime before the 1900 Census, Charles' father Henry and step-mother Sarah would separate. Henry went to live with Charles' sister Anna Maria, reporting he was divorced. On a separate census, Sarah appeared living by herself, reporting that she was widowed, a status with less stigma attached.

I couldn't find Charles in 1880. He married Sarah E. Parker on 13 Feb 1878 and they had a daughter named Lena Rebecca, born in 1884. Sadly, Sarah died two years later in 1886 at age 32, leaving behind little Lena, aged 2.

With no 1890 Census available, I wasn't able to catch back up with Charles until 1900. On 24 Nov 1897, he had remarried, exchanging vows with Susan Hossler White. It was also a second marriage for her. She had previously married Granville Moody White on 12 Nov 1876 in Marshall County, and they had had four children together--an infant son who was born and died on 29 Feb 1880, son Walter Edward, born in 1877, daughter Mylte I., born in 1886, and daughter Iva Dell, born in 1889. Granville died in 1894.

I found Charles and Susan's blended family on the 1900 Census. They were living in Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana, where Charles, aged 43, was earning a living as a day laborer. Susan, aged 43, reported that she had had only four children, and that all had survived to that census. She did not account for the infant son lost in 1880. With their parents and step-parents were Susan's three children with Granville White--Walter, aged 22, Mylte, aged 14, and Iva, aged 11, Lena, aged 15--Charles' daughter with first-wife Sarah, and 1-year-old Arthur Francis, Charles' and Susan's (thus-far) only child together, born on 25 Sep of 1898.

I was able to catch back up with the family in 1910. They were still living in Plymouth. Charles, aged 53, was earning a living as a woodworker of novelty works. Susan, aged 53, reported that she had had six children, but that only four had survived to that census. When the sixth child came along is a mystery. The only child still living with Charles and Susan was son Arthur, aged 11.

Charles' daughter Lena had married Monroe Bennett on 20 Nov 1902 in Marshall County. Susan's daughter Iva married Fred P. Crowe on 1 May 1909 in St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Charles' and Susan's son Arthur would marry Dina Elesa Cramer on 7 Jul 1921 in Plymouth.

After seventeen years together, death first claimed Susan on 20 Nov 1914 at age 58. Charles survived less than a year without her, dying on 6 Aug 1915, also at age 58.
