CHARLES CHAPMAN, RETIRED CARPENTER, DIES AT AGE 76


Charles E. Chapman, age 76, a retired Spencer township carpenter and contractor, was dead on arrival at the Dr. Bonnell M. Souder hospital in Auburn at 11:30 p.m. Thursday.


Mr. Chapman was stricken with a heart attack at his home on state road 1, one-half mile south of Spencerville and was rushed to the hospital by his sons. He was pronounced dead from the seizure upon arrival at the hospital.


The body was removed to the Baidinger & Walter funeral home in Spencerville where services were at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Ivan O. Miller, pastor of the St. Peter's Lutheran church in Spencerville, officiating.


Burial followed in the White the funeral home at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Ivan O. Miller, pastor of the St. Peter's Lutheran church in Spencerville, officiating. Burial will follow in the White City cemetery at Spencerville.


Mr. Chapman had been in failing health since his retirement seven years ago but had been able to be up and around.


A native of Spencer township, he was born Nov. 13, 1886, son of the late Eben Chapman and Irene Markle Chapman. He was a lifelong resident of the Spencerville community.


In a ceremony performed May 2, 1909, he married Frances Butler. The wife survives with three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Folk, New Carlisle, Ind., Mrs. Robert Crowl, Spencerville, and Mrs. Donald Cook, Spencerville; two sons, Richard Chapman, Spencerville, and David Chapman, also also of Spencerville; three brothers, Lee Chapman of the City hotel, Auburn, Jay Chapman, Rt. 9, Fort Wayne, and William Chapman of near Fort Wayne; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Lepper, Fort Wayne, Mrs. Myrtle Gater, Toledo, and Mildred Mullen, Fort Wayne, and 14 grandchildren.
