Merwin Leon Jensen, 75, died Friday, May 9, 2014, at home in Wamego.
The family provided some of the following information.
He was born in Denver on May 9, 1939, to Harley R. and Carla E. Jensen.
Merwin and his parents returned to rural Ruskin, Nuckolls County, Neb., in 1941, the area where his parents had been raised. He was baptized and confirmed as a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin.
He attended Ruskin and Wymer elementary schools in Nuckolls County and graduated from Hardy High School in 1957. He attended Fairbury Junior College in Fairbury, Neb..
He married Sharon K. Torring in 1961 at Bethany Lutheran Church. The couple lived in El Paso, Texas, while Merwin was in the military in 1961-62. The family later lived in Nuckolls County, where he was employed with J. Lynch & Co.
In 1971, the family moved to Goodland, where Merwin managed the grain elevator in nearby Edson for 14 years.
Merwin was later employed at Bank West both as a loan officer and as president of the branch in St. Francis. After leaving the bank, Merwin worked as finance officer for Golden West Community Services in Goodland.
Merwin considered his faith in God as the most important thing in his life. He was an active member of his church as a Stephen Minister, president of the congregation and various other aspects.
He served with various community organizations, including Pioneer Country Development, the Goodland Lions Club and as a 12-year member of the Goodland school board. He was instrumental in starting the Sherman County home-owned carnival.
Merwin was always an active member of his church.
Following retirement, the couple moved to Manhattan, and then to their current home in Wamego, where Merwin was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and served as an elder.
Most recently, until he was no longer able, he enjoyed meeting with farmers, doing statistical work for the Kansas Department of Agriculture.
Merwin loved being outdoors, working in his yard and garden or enjoying bird-watching while sitting on the deck of their home.
He was an avid K-State fan, attending both football and basketball games with his family.
He also had great enthusiasm for working on carpentry projects in his woodshop as well as repairing nearly anything, whether for his own home or those of his children. If it was broken, it was rare that Merwin could not fix it.
He had a deep love for his family and took much pride in the achievements of his four children and nine grandchildren, and found great joy attending their various activities.
Merwin was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon, his children, Scott D. Jensen (Ann) of Wichita, Elliot L. Jensen (Sallie) of Andover, Trevor N. Jensen (Edie) of St. George, and Erika N. (Jensen) Schoenbeck (Matt) of Wamego; grandchildren, Eric, Sarah, Whitney, Peyton, Logan and Allie Jensen, and Emma, Bennett and Skylar Schoenbeck; step granddaughters, Brandy Grieve (Jimme) and Brook Conrady (Andrew); and step great-grandchildren, Zane Grieve and Stella Conrady.
