History of the 49 NC Infantry Unit:
The regiment was recruited from the North Carolina counties of McDowell, Cleveland, Iredell, Moore, Mecklenburg, Gaston, Catawba, and Lincoln in the Spring of 1862. They served in the Army of Northern Virginia, fighting on the Peninsula, 2nd Manassas, and Maryland Campaigns.
The remainder of the War:
They were at Fredericksburg in December, then in North Carolina around New Bern. They were at Drewery's Bluff and Cold Harbor (May and June 1864) , in the trenches at Petersburg (1864-5), and at Appomattox.

William Getty Smart was born in Rutherford County where he resided as a laborer. Circa 1860 - William moved to York, SC and married Margaret Murphy, and started a family. He returned to Rutherford County in 1862, and he and several family members went into McDowell County, NC to enlist in the 49th NC Infantry on February 26, 1862 (he was 31). He served with this unit until transferred to the Reserve Corp in July or August of 1864 and then returned to York, SC. The rest of his children were born in York, SC after the Civil War, before he and his family migrated back to Rutherford County, NC around 1890 to work during the Gold rush.
His brother Philo Whitefield Smart was in the same unit during the Civil War, and Philo was killed in the trenches at the Battle of Petersburg, VA. William later named a son, after his brother Philo Whitefield Smart.

William & Margaret were married in York, SC on June 5th, 1860.
