Crystal was first of two children of her parents. When she was a young child, the family lived at the "San," the state tuberculosis sanatorium in the foothills of the Turtle Mountains, from 1937 until about 1942. Her father was the facility's business director. They family eventually moved to Manfred to farm, and Crystal lived there until about 1947. She then lived at the Grafton State School until her death.
